June WMRA meeting recap
We had plenty of keen West Melton Residents as well as guests Cr Mark Alexander and Cr Pat McEvedy along this evening. Plenty of topics up for discussion, from broken flags to get-togethers and even the obligatory reference to a pedestrian underpass! We were especially thankful to Alastair McNeal and Accessman for his recent efforts, replacing the street flags and we welcomed Melanie as our new Secretary. Thank you both!
West Melton Community Board
This board is in the process of closing down. Bruce discussed what would happen with left over funds, and spoke about a couple of last funding requests being processed including the local Scouts club. Community Board funding will come off rating bills from July 1.
Cr Mark Alexander spoke about how the Selwyn Youth Council has taken the lead on this project after it was presented so well to council recently. They will work through finding a location and design for the new facility, then submit it for the next annual plan. Their preference is to have the skate park on the north side of SH73 for accessibility.
Gilman Wheelans Shopping Centre Consent
At this stage, the resource consent for this development is still on hold, at the request of the applicant.
West Melton Get Together
We had great discussion on this forthcoming event, lead by Gill & Gerry. The online questionnaire showed good support for the initiative, with 71 people indicating they would come, predominantly in support of the kiwiana theme with a good nucleus offering to help coordinate the event. We concluded that the event should be framed primarily around social interaction and therefore shouldn’t have a band, but holding another shin dig at a later date would also be considered. We agreed the date should be September 10.
Bruce spoke about progress with new Community Centre, presenting the latest proposed landscaping & car parking plan. The project does not have Resource or Building consent issued, mainly due to the discovery of an old sheep dip where the new car park will go. Environmental plans to remove this are almost complete and the project is expected to go to tender at the end of July, with foundations being in place before Christmas and eventual occupation in September 2017. Bruce broke down the construction costs for the committee and discussed the impressive progress with fundraising to date – aiming to raise just in excess of $1M. A letter will be circulating to households soon calling for private and corporate sponsors.
We recapped last month’s West Melton ANZAC day ceremony through a lens of improvement with some good ideas put forward. We were thrilled with the turn-out and very thankful for the help of the school, morning tea team, musicians and speakers. Thank you all who were involved!
Elections of Councillors, Mayor and Health Board are coming this October. Candidates need to put their names forward from July – August. Cr Mark encouraged people to consider the job. Kelvin Coe will be retiring from the position at the end of this term. The WMRA plans to hold a meet-the-candidates-evening for the community. This is currently framed for August 24.
We’re framing up some new ideas for community events this spring / summer. Christmas street lights, a shin dig and even a household Christmas light competition!
That’s all for now. Next meeting is August 10.
