150th celebrations commence!
West Melton’s 150th celebrations kicked off this September with the town’s first official event, the ‘Time after Time field day’. Held at the Robinson Farm on West Melton Road, thousands came through the gate in perfect spring weather for a taste of what life on the Canterbury Plains was like in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
The atmosphere was vibrant, with a band playing, townsfolk dressed for the occasion and so many things to see and do. The town crier kept the show ticking as he guided people to and from the various demonstrations such as the Blacksmith, butter churn, knitting & weaving, traction engine displays, dog trials, ploughing, pottery, shearing and more.
Congratulations to all the volunteers who pushed this magnificent event through from concept to reality. All your hours of organising, building and preparation have been well worth it – the response from our growing community has been overwhelming!
