Some history …
In 1996 the West Melton music group for preschoolers, called ‘Rugrats’, was set up by Joyce Davey and Lynette Hulston with backing from West Melton Plunket. With their teaching background Joyce and Lynette decided to do their own style. Lynette played the guitar and Joyce helped the kiddies with the actions. The Scarecrow was a popular song!
For the next 10 years every Thursday the Presbyterian Church was busy with excited children, parents, grandparents, nannies and caregivers from Yaldhurst, Springston, Darfield and of course West Melton. Many reliable helpers organised the morning teas.
Money from Plunket, the Church, a private donation, and $1,000 from Canterbury Community Trust bought instruments and toys that are still played with today. The youngest participant was only a week old and the eldest almost 5 years.
After 10 years two local girls took it on before it eventually becoming Mainly Music run by Hope Presbyterian.
Today 18 years later we still get a smile from one of the ‘big’ people who recognise us.
