Water restrictions lifted

The Selwyn District Council have recently lifted West Melton’s township watering restrictions following what was the driest Canterbury summer in 10 years.

“Watering restrictions have now been lifted for properties connected to the West Melton water supply. The restrictions were in place due to ECAN restrictions on ground water take for bores supplying West Melton. Ground water levels are now recovering, allowing the restrictions to be lifted.

Watering restrictions have also been lifted for Springfield. Restrictions were in place as the town is supplied by treated water from the Kowai River and the river was experiencing low flows due to weather conditions. River levels have now risen, enabling the restrictions to be lifted.

The lifting of restrictions mean that lawns and gardens may be watered at any time. The Council still encourages property owners to water lawns and gardens after 9pm and before 6am where possible as this is the time of lowest water use and also provides the best opportunity for water to soak into the ground. We appreciate your cooperation while the restrictions were in place.”
